Andrew Robertson - A Detailed Overview
Early Life
Robertson was born on March 11, 1994 in Glasgow, Scotland. His initial interest in football was sparked by both his parents who are avid supporters of the sport. He was raised in a working-class family who, despite their economic circumstances, supported his aspirations for professional football. At the age of 15, he was released by Celtic due to concerns about his small stature which could have been a challenge in his football career. Rejection didn’t slow him down though, and he joined Queen's Park, a team in the Scottish third tier, where he started his senior career.
Club Career - Queen's Park & Dundee United
After joining Queen's Park in 2012, Robertson quickly made a name for himself with his pace, crossing ability, and sound defending. In his first year, he made 34 appearances, and his impressive performance caught the attention of Dundee United who signed him in 2013. During his stint at Dundee United, he bagged the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year and was also included in PFA Scotland Team of the Year.
Club Career - Hull City
In July 2014, Robertson made a switch to English football by signing for Hull City. Despite the team's inconsistency, he made 99 appearances for the club and was a standout player with his performances, particularly in the 2016-17 Premier League season which, although ending in Hull's relegation, served to heighten his reputation.
Club Career - Liverpool
In July 2017, Liverpool secured Robertson's transfer for approximately £8 million. Robertson initially struggled to get into the first team, but after winning a regular spot, he demonstrated his worth with his robust defending and valuable assists. His consistent performances played a significant role in Liverpool's Champions League win in 2019 and the Premier League victory in 2020. He was also named in the 2018-19 PFA Team of the Year.
International Career
Robertson's talent saw him representing Scotland at various age levels until he was called up for the senior squad in 2014. Since then, he has been a key player for his country and was an integral part of the team that qualified for Euro 2020, Scotland's first major tournament appearance in over two decades. In September 2018, he was named as the captain of the Scotland national team.
Playing Style
Robertson is widely hailed for his tireless running, accurate crossing, and solid defending. As a left-back, his work ethic and energetic performances have endeared him to both teammates and fans. He is also recognised for his leadership capabilities both on and off the field.
Personal Life
Robertson is married to Rachel Roberts, and the couple has two children. Away from football, he is noted for his philanthropic effort. He is the ambassador for 'Tackle Kids Cancer', a charitable campaign by Eli Manning. He also initiated a 'Players Together' initiative in which Premier League players worked collectively to raise fund for NHS Charities Together.
