Riyad Mahrez - A Detailed Overview
Early Life
Riyad Karim Mahrez was born on February 21, 1991, in the northern suburbs of Paris, France. Interested in football from an early age, he joined the youth team of AAS Sarcelles when he was just seven years old. Mahrez's father was a former player and had a significant influence on his early career, encouraging his interest and helping him develop his skills. However, the death of his father when Mahrez was just 15 was a significant emotional blow, but it also served to strengthen his determination to make it as a professional footballer.
Club Career - Early years
In 2009, Mahrez signed a contract with Quimper, a club in the French fourth division, making his professional debut at the age of 18. His performances attracted interest from higher-tier clubs, and he moved to Le Havre in 2010, a club known for its excellent youth academy. Initially playing for Le Havre's reserve team, he progressed to the first team in 2011. Over the next couple of years, he grew in confidence and skill, scoring six goals in his final season with the club.
Club Career - Leicester City
Mahrez moved to English football in January 2014, signing with Leicester City who, at the time, were playing in the Championship, the second tier of English football. Leicester won promotion to the Premier League in Mahrez's first season at the club. He played a key role in the 2015-2016 Premier League season when Leicester City pulled off a shock win to claim the Premier League title. Mahrez's outstanding performances saw him named the PFA Players' Player of the Year, becoming the first African player to win the award.
Club Career - Manchester City
In 2018, Mahrez secured a move to Manchester City for a then club-record fee of £60m, making him the most expensive African footballer at the time. Under the coaching of Pep Guardiola, Mahrez developed his game even further. Wide-ranging skills, nimble movement and his ability to score from outside the box have been key traits in his performances for the club. He has won several titles with Manchester City, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and the League Cup.
International Career
Despite being born in France, Mahrez chose to represent Algeria (his parents' home country) internationally and made his debut for the national team in 2014. His performances in the Africa Cup of Nations have helped Algeria to consistently high finishes, including winning the tournament in 2019, with Mahrez as one of the standout players.
Style of Play
Mahrez is known for his skill, agility, and flair on the ball. Primarily a winger, he is adept at cutting inside from the right onto his favored left foot. His dribbling ability is among the best in the world, and he is also a consistent scoring threat, not just from open play but also from free kicks and penalties.
Legacy and Impact
Alongside his team achievements, Mahrez's career shows a rise from the lower tiers of French football to the pinnacle of the game, indicative of his talent, hard work, and perseverance. His success has also put Algerian football on the map and inspired many young African footballers. Outside of the field, Mahrez is known for his philanthropy, often donating to charities and helping causes in both Algeria and the UK.
