Lionel Messi - A Detailed Overview
Early Life
Lionel Messi, born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina, showed a keen interest in soccer from an early age. His father, Jorge Messi was a steel worker and coach of the local football team, while his mother Celia was a part-time cleaner. Messi started playing football from the time he could walk, often with his two older brothers and cousins. His talent was noticeable from a young age and, at the age of 6, Messi joined his local club Newell’s Old Boys.
Youth Career and Challenges
By the time he was 10, Messi had joined the Rosario team and had become one of the best players in the league. However, at the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. This was a potentially career-stopping condition, because his family couldn’t afford the necessary treatment. This changed however, when, after a trial, Barcelona sporting director Carles Rexach was so impressed with Messi's skills that he offered to pay for his treatment if he moved to Spain. Messi, then 13, moved with his family to Spain to play for Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia.
Professional Career at Barcelona
Messi quickly moved up the ranks at Barcelona, making his first team debut at the age of 16 in a friendly match. He officially debuted in the 2004-05 season and since then his career skyrocketed. He won his first Ballon d'Or in 2009, at the age of 21. Messi went on to win four more Ballon d'Or titles in the next six years. Known for his incredible dribbling and goal scoring ability, Messi became the all-time top scorer for Barcelona and La Liga. He played a major role in the team, leading it to numerous wins, including four UEFA Champions League titles and ten La Liga titles. Messi’s performances on the pitch were extraordinary and breathtaking, propelling his status as one of the greatest athletes in history.
International Career
Messi made his full international debut for Argentina in August 2005, during a friendly against Hungary. Throughout his international career, Messi experienced several ups and downs. Despite the criticisms regarding his performance with the national team, Messi led Argentina to the finals of the 2014 World Cup and won the Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player. Also, after many attempts, Messi finally won his first major international title, the Copa America, in 2021. His performance during the tournament once again earned him the best player award.
Transfer to Paris Saint-Germain
In one of the most shocking transfers of football history, Messi left Barcelona and signed a two-year contract (with an option for a third) with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in August 2021 after spending his entire professional career at Barcelona. The move came after Barcelona stated they could not afford to renew his contract due to their financial difficulties. His arrival at PSG was met with great excitement, adding another exciting chapter to his extraordinary career.
Personal Life
Messi married Antonela Roccuzzo, his childhood sweetheart, in 2017. They have three children together. Despite his fame, Messi is known to be private about his personal life, and often keeps a low profile. He is also recognized for his philanthropy, having established the Leo Messi Foundation which supports access to education and health care for vulnerable children.
